Guadalupe Society
The Guadalupano organization at Mission Dolores was founded over 30 years ago under the auspices of Bishop Norman F. McFarland, then pastor of Mission Dolores Basilica. Throughout the years, members of the organization have served the parish as deacons, lectors, Eucharistic ministers, Old Mission tour guides, CCD teachers, collection counters, choir members, passion play performers on Good Friday and as members of the Parish Council.
The major event of the organization is the Mananitas Mass in honor of Our Lady of Guadalupe on the morning of December 12 at 5:00 am. Bishop Wester presides at this Mass and the music is provided by a group of mariachis, according to the Mexican tradition. Also, as part of this tradition, only roses are used to decorate the church and thousands of rose petals are dropped from the cupola one hundred fifty feet above the congregation. The Mass is followed by a breakfast of Mexican tamales, hot chocolate and sweet rolls.
This major event is preceded by several Sociedad fund raising social events throughout the year including a Spaghetti Dinner in June and a Halloween Dance in October. Other fund raising efforts include bus tour trips to Reno and Lake Tahoe. Please see website and the weekly Sunday church bulletin for more details on these events throughout the year.
Membership is open to all and meetings take place on the first Sunday of each month at 1:30 pm in the Gold Room.
